Product margins by the numbers

Last updated: November 2026

What is a good profit margin for a physical product?

Product Marketing Alliance puts typical margins for physical products at 30% to 60%, well below the 80% to 95% it lists for digital products.

The Costing Ledger, published by Cydney Mar, collects the published benchmarks most useful to consumer product founders. Each figure belongs to its named source. The gap between physical and digital margins is the cost of materials, making, freight and storage, which is exactly what careful product costing controls.

What the numbers mean for a new consumer product

A physical product starts at a structural disadvantage to digital goods, so there is less room for costs you did not plan for. A 50% markup, inside the starting range Online Labels describes, is only a 33.3% margin: near the bottom of the physical product range. Once marketing and channel fees are added, Wayflyer’s 20% contribution margin floor can disappear quickly. The practical answer is to cost the product fully before committing to a run, using the product costing calculator.

Common questions

What is a good profit margin for a physical product?
Product Marketing Alliance lists typical margins of 30% to 60% for physical products, compared with 80% to 95% for digital products. Physical products carry materials, manufacturing, freight and storage, so their margins sit lower. Aim for a margin that still covers marketing and overhead once those costs are added.
What is the average retail markup on a product?
There is no single average, but Online Labels notes that many businesses start with a markup in the 30% to 50% range to cover costs while staying competitive, and that growing demand may allow markups of 80%, 100% or even 200%. Your category, channel and costs decide where your product should sit.
What is the average profit for a small business?
There is no reliable single figure, because profit varies widely by industry, size and business model. A product business with a 50% gross margin can still earn little net profit after marketing and overhead. For a benchmark in your category, check your national statistics agency, an industry association or an accountant who works with product brands.
What does "gross margin" mean?
Gross margin is the share of your selling price left after paying the direct cost of the product. It is calculated as selling price minus unit cost, divided by selling price. Dinkytown’s example: a $10 cost and a $15 price give a gross margin of $5, or 33.33%. It does not yet include overhead such as rent or marketing.
